Rudolph Young’s interests today may lean toward history, but he played a big role in sports history during his high school career.

Young was nominated not just for his athletic achievements, but for his continuing service to the community. Young is a member and past president of the African American Genealogical Association.  He is currently Commander of the Lincolnton Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and active with the American Legion and the Rural Hill Historical Site.  He is also a member of the Newbold Alumni Association.

He began setting high school records at Middletown High School in Middletown, CT, where he was the first freshman in 20 years to earn a letter in track.  From 1961 to 1963, Young played football and ran track at Newbold High School under Joseph Harper and R.J. Armstrong.

While at Newbold, Young set 8 of 10 school records in track and field, set two district records in the long jump and shot put, and won 8 medals (6 gold) in state meets.  He was the only member of his school track team to participate on the state level.  Reports of one meet revealed statistics including a first place broad jump of 23 feet and 3 inches and a distance for the shot put of 42 ¾  feet for second place.

But Young’s football career at Newbold High School was just as impressive.  He was All State in 1962 and 1963, playing defensive tackle and offensive fullback.  Young rushed for the most yards and scored more points than any Newbold player in the 16 year history of the school.

He currently resides in Iron Station, and is retired in private security from Duke Energy.
